OpenAI is developing its own social platform similar to X, The Verge reported on Tuesday, citing multiple people familiar with the matter.
According to the report, there is an internal prototype focused on generating images using ChatGPT and featuring a social feed.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has privately sought outside opinions on the project, which is still in its early stages, the Verge notes. It’s unclear whether the company will release the social network as a standalone app or integrate it into ChatGPT, the report says.
The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The potential move could exacerbate tensions between Mr. Altman and billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of X and co-founder of OpenAI, who left the startup in 2018 before it became a leader in generative artificial intelligence.
The conflict has escalated in recent months. In February, a consortium of investors led by Mr. Musk made an unsolicited $97.4 billion offer for control of OpenAI, but Mr. Altman quickly rejected it, saying, “No thanks.”
Last year, Mr. Musk sued ChatGPT's creator and Mr. Altman, arguing that they had strayed from OpenAI's original goal of developing AI for the benefit of humanity, not for corporate gain.
Earlier this month, OpenAI filed a countersuit against Mr. Musk, accusing him of systematic harassment and attempts to obstruct the company’s transition to a commercial model. Both sides plan to begin a jury trial next spring.
OpenAI’s social network could also put the company in direct competition with Facebook owner Meta, which is reportedly working on a separate Meta AI service. In February, Mr. Altman responded to media reports about Meta’s plans for X by saying, “OK, maybe we’ll build a social app.”
Both Meta and X have access to a huge amount of data—public content posted by users on their social media platforms—on which they train their AI models.
