Michelle Obama has strongly denied divorce rumors after Barack Obama attended several high-profile events without her.
These events included the inauguration of Donald Trump and the funeral of former US President Jimmy Carter.
This has sparked speculation and rumors about the state of their marriage.
On the Work in Progress podcast hosted by actress Sophia Bush, Mrs. Obama noted that she can now manage her own schedule “as a grown woman” after her busy schedule as first lady.
She added that many could not believe that she was “making decisions” on her own, and so “we had to assume that my husband and I were getting a divorce.”
Mrs. Obama admitted to feeling guilty about backing out on some commitments.
“I think that's what we as women face as a frustration,” she said.
“I mean, this year people couldn’t even comprehend that I was making a choice on my own, and they had to assume that my husband and I were getting a divorce.
“It can't be a grown woman just making decisions for herself, right? But that's what society does to us.”
Mrs Obama added: “I made a decision to do what was best for me. Not what I should have done. Not what I thought other people wanted me to do.”
The Obamas celebrated their 32nd anniversary last October.
