China said it would impose a 34% tariff on all imported goods from the United States starting April 10.
The new tariff is in line with the “retaliatory” tariff set by US President Donald Trump this week.
China's Commerce Ministry also announced plans to tighten export controls on rare earth metals, materials used in high-tech products such as computer chips and electric vehicle batteries.
In addition, the Chinese government said it would add 27 U.S. companies to a list subject to trade sanctions or export controls.
Beijing also said it had filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization over the tariffs.
