Washington (Sputnik) – the new legislation will facilitate government regulation of social media in light of Facebook’s failure to adequately protect User information, senators John Kennedy and Amy Klobuchar said in a press release.
On Wednesday during parliamentary hearings on the protection of consumer data, Kennedy warned the CEO of Facebook mark Zuckerberg that the Congress may be forced to regulate social media giant. Zuckerberg has shown for two days this week to answer questions concerning both political consulting firms collect personal data from approximately 87 million users of Facebook.
“The data breach at Facebook showed the world that the digital promised land is not all milk and honey. We found some impurities in the punch bowl,” said Kennedy in a release on Thursday. “I don’t want to regulate Facebook half to death, but there are things that need to be changed. Our bill will help protect Americans ‘online fingerprint data”.
According to the press release, the bill will improve transparency and strengthen treatment options consumers following the breach. The company will also be required to comply with new privacy rules that better protect consumers in the proposed bill.
In March it became known that personal information of up to 87 million users of Facebook was collected in a Cambridge consulting firm analyst without their permission. While working for major political campaigns, the firm gathered information to develop a mechanism that could predict and influence the behavior of voters in the United States.
