Trump portrait to be removed after president says it's 'distorted'

A portrait of US President Donald Trump that hangs in the Colorado state capitol building will be removed after Mr Trump said it was “intentionally distorted”, state officials said.

House Democrats said in a statement that the oil painting would be removed at the request of Republican leaders in the legislature.

“If the Republican Party wants to spend its time and money deciding what kind of portrait of Trump goes on the Capitol, that's their business,” the Democrats said.

The painting was created by artist Sarah Boardman during Trump's first term and was unveiled in 2019.

Colorado Republicans raised more than $10,000 (£8,360) through GoFundMe to fund the oil painting.

In a post Sunday on his Truth Social platform, Mr. Trump indicated that he would prefer there to be no portrait, rather than the one that now hangs in the Colorado Capitol building.

The Republican praised a nearby portrait of former President Barack Obama (also created by Boardman), saying “it looks great.”

The portraits are overseen by the Colorado Building Advisory Committee.

Boardman did not immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment on the matter.

She previously told The Denver Post that it was important to her that her work featuring Obama and Trump appear “apolitical.”
