Russia to Build Fourth Generation Synchrotron on an Island

Russian scientists believe that the introduction of advanced research facilities will give Russia a new competitive advantage in the global research market.

President Vladimir Putin gave the nod to the proposed construction of a particle accelerator on the far Eastern island of Russian, Director of the Kurchatov Institute National research center Mikhail Kovalchuk said.

“Today we did it! The idea came as a surprise. We shared it [with Putin], and he said he liked it. The President just announced that we will build the synchrotron at the University in the far East on the Russian island,” Kovalchuk to journalists after a meeting with Vladimir Putin at the Kurchatov Institute.

In February, President Putin gave his initial support for the establishment of a powerful, $ 640 million, the synchrotron to investigate the structure of matter at the nanometer scale.

The synchrotron is an extremely powerful source of x-ray radiation, which is produced by high energy electrons as they circulate around the synchrotron.

The synchrotron accelerates electrons to very high energies and forcing them periodically change direction.

Received x-rays are emitted as dozens of thin beams, each of which is directed to the next part of the accelerator channel.

Currently, there are two synchrotron in Russia, one in Novosibirsk, the other in Moscow.

The fourth generation synchrotron could be built in five to seven years to build the infrastructure remaining from the Soviet Collider in Protvino, near Moscow, which was suspended in the 1990-ies.
