Polls open in Greenland as Trump seeks control of strategic island

Greenland has launched snap parliamentary elections, opening polling stations as US President Donald Trump seeks to seize control of the strategically important Arctic island.

The self-governing region of Denmark is home to 56,000 people, most of whom are indigenous Inuit, and its location is of significant strategic importance in the North Atlantic.

In addition, the island is rich in rare earth minerals, which play an important role in the global economy.

Preliminary election results are expected shortly after polls close at 22:00 GMT on Tuesday, but final results will not be confirmed for several weeks as ballots are flown to the capital Nuuk from remote communities by boat, plane and helicopter.

Although the island has been seeking independence since 2009, leaving Denmark is not on the agenda for a referendum, although many are considering it.

Instead, voters on Tuesday will elect 31 representatives who will shape the island's debate on when and whether to declare independence in the future.
