Using e-ID, available on a special application, it will be possible to confirm one's identity in contacts with public and private entities, including in situations such as taking out a mortgage loan at a bank, voting in elections or receiving parcels at the post office.

E-ID does not replace traditional ID, and its possession will be voluntary. Its implementation is divided into several phases; it is to be fully functional, including for online procedures, by 2026.

As Grande-Marlaska stressed on Tuesday, the new solution makes Spain one of the first countries in Europe to introduce the possibility of confirming identity using e-ID cards.

In Poland, a similar application, mObywatel, was created in 2017. Initially, it only allowed for displaying basic personal data. Since 2020, it has been possible to use eRecept and mPrawo jazdy, and since 2023 – when the mObywatel Act was passed – the digital identity document has the same legal force as its plastic counterpart.
