Meta is planning to dismiss about 600 workers from its artificial intelligence sector to curtail superfluous managerial tiers and enhance operational agility.

According to Delo.ua, a company representative disclosed this to CNBC .

The downsizing was conveyed in an internal communication from Chief AI Executive Alexandr Wang, who joined Meta back in June as part of the corporation’s $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI.

These job cuts will encompass employees in the AI Infrastructure and Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) departments, along with various other teams involved in AI-related projects.

Meta is proactively reshaping its artificial intelligence framework, altering its emphasis from fundamental investigation to the hands-on advancement of intelligent frameworks and the establishment of its own superintelligence.

Current staffing adjustments and investments

In June 2025, Meta channeled $14.3 billion into the startup Scale AI, securing an interest in the venture and inviting its founder, Alexander Wang, to spearhead a fresh strategic path — the inception of Meta Superintelligence.

Concurrently, the firm has initiated a significant team augmentation: Meta is onboarding leading scientists and programmers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, extending contracts valued at tens of millions of dollars. This is an extraordinary action, even within a tech sector marked by intense competition for AI proficiency.

The function of Alexander Van

Serving as the new Chief AI Officer, Wang is charged with significantly boosting the AI division's effectiveness. His main goal is to integrate Meta AI's research, infrastructure, and production streams into a cohesive, nimble framework capable of promptly introducing novel models, services, and offerings to rival OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

In his internal exchanges, Wang highlighted that “leaner, more responsible teams will be empowered to execute tasks quicker and reach conclusions without excessive layers of coordination.”

Tactical realignment

The curtailments in FAIR and AI Infrastructure denote a transition away from expansive academic research collectives towards streamlined product segments concentrating on outcomes and the swift assimilation of solutions into Meta products — such as Meta AI, LLaMA 3, and the Threads and Instagram AI Tools platforms.

In tandem, a new hub is under formation — TBD Lab, reporting straight to Alexander Wang and dedicated to pioneering superintelligence architecture. The company's essential assets and premier engineers are being relocated there.

Final thoughts

Meta is evolving towards a “less is more” paradigm: optimizing employee numbers and diminishing managerial strata, while simultaneously allocating unprecedented sums to elite talent and cutting-edge exploration. This plan should render the organization more versatile and enable it to sustain its dominant status in the pursuit of devising artificial superintelligence.
