DI license plates on cars – what region is this in Ukraine?
DI series license plates are becoming an increasingly common sight on Ukrainian roads, but their true purpose remains a mystery to many drivers. What is this series, why did it appear, and how to get such numbers – we at Delo.ua understand all the details of the digital revolution in car registration.
These numbers have no relation to the geographical regions of Ukraine. This is a fundamentally new approach to vehicle registration, based on fully digital technologies and allowing documents to be issued without visiting government institutions.
What do the new license plate series mean?
The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs has introduced four new series of license plates, each of which has its own specific purpose and reflects the method of document processing.
DI and PD series for registration through Diia
The DI and PD series are intended for cars, motorcycles and mopeds whose owners have used the services of the Unified State Web Portal of Electronic Services “Diya”. These series are automatically assigned to vehicles during online registration through the official application.
The DI series is usually used for passenger cars, while the PD is more often used for motorcycles and mopeds, although there is no strict division by type of vehicle.
ED and DC series for Electronic Driver's Cabin
Alternative ED and DC series are intended for owners who issue documents through the Driver's Electronic Cabinet within the unified information system of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This service works in parallel with Diya and provides similar functionality for digital registration.
All four series have a common feature: they are not tied to any region of Ukraine and were created specifically to indicate online registration as an alternative to traditional paper document flow.
Features of the DI series and conditions for obtaining it
The DI series has become the most popular of the new digital numbers due to its convenience and availability through the widely used Diya app. However, obtaining such numbers has certain limitations and requirements.
Who can get DI series numbers?
The service is available exclusively to individuals who are residents of Ukraine and have a confirmed account in the Diya system. Legal entities and entrepreneurs cannot yet use this option and are forced to complete documents in the traditional way.
Cases where DI numbers are not available
The system has technical limitations that make online registration impossible in certain situations. DI plates are not available for cars registered before 2013 if their information is not available in the Ministry of Internal Affairs' electronic registers.
It is also impossible to obtain such numbers if the parties to the purchase and sale transaction or the vehicle itself are wanted by law enforcement agencies. The system automatically blocks registration until all legal issues are resolved.
The lack of up-to-date data on the place of residence in the State Demographic Register also becomes an obstacle to obtaining DI numbers. In this case, it is first necessary to update personal data in the system.
Step-by-step registration procedure through Diya
The process of obtaining DI series license plates is as simplified and automated as possible, but requires consistent execution of all steps and attention when filling out documents.
Step 1. Prepare documents and log in to the system
Log in to the Diya app using your verified account and select the “Vehicle Registration” or “Vehicle Re-registration” service, depending on your situation. Make sure that all your personal data in the system is up to date.
Prepare digital copies of the necessary documents: purchase agreement, preliminary vehicle registration certificate, documents confirming ownership, and insurance policy.
Step 2. Fill out the application and select options
Carefully fill out all fields of the electronic application, checking the correctness of the entered data. Pay special attention to the technical characteristics of the car, which must exactly match the documents.
At the stage of selecting license plates, the system will offer several options: keep the previous numbers if you are satisfied with them, or order new DI series numbers. You can also choose the method of delivery of finished documents.
Step 3. Pay for services and wait for processing
After successful payment, the application is submitted to the relevant departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for consideration. Processing usually takes 1 to 3 business days, but may take longer during peak periods or due to technical problems.
Step 4. Obtaining documents and license plates
The finished registration certificate and new license plates are delivered to the address specified in the application. Delivery is carried out via Ukrposhta or private courier services, depending on the options selected.
Upon receipt, be sure to check the correctness of all data in the certificate and the correspondence of the license plates to the order. If you find any errors, immediately contact the support service.
Advantages and disadvantages of DI series numbers
Digital registration with obtaining DI numbers has both obvious advantages and certain limitations that should be considered when choosing a method of document processing.
Technical specifications and appearance
DI series license plates are manufactured to the same technical standards as traditional Ukrainian license plates, but have distinctive features that distinguish them from regional series.
Format and arrangement of elements
The standard number format includes two letters DI instead of the traditional regional code, followed by four digits and two letters according to the Ukrainian standard. For example: DI 1234 AB.
The color scheme fully complies with current regulations: black symbols on a white background for passenger cars, white symbols on a black background for motorcycles and mopeds.
The size, font, and relative arrangement of license plate elements are strictly regulated and controlled during manufacturing. This ensures compatibility with automatic license plate recognition systems.
Security features and authentication
DI license plates have the same security features as regular Ukrainian license plates: holographic stickers, special materials, and manufacturing technologies that make forgery difficult.
Each license plate has a unique code that is linked to a specific vehicle in the electronic databases of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This allows for instant verification of the authenticity and legality of the use of the license plate.
