Xherdan Shaqiri’s goal the difference as Switzerland beat Republic of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland were beaten 1-0 by Switzerland in tonight’s friendly at the Aviva Stadium.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s first-half free-kick settled the game.

There was a debut late-on for Finn Azaz, but Ireland failed to produce a goal in either of John O’Shea’s games in charge.

His interim tenure is now at an end.

In tonight’s Euro 2024 playoff in Cardiff, it’s Wales 0 Poland 0.

While in the neutral venue of Wroclaw, Ukraine beat Iceland 2-1.

Earlier, Georgia qualified for the Euros for the first time in their history.

They beat Greece on penalties, following a scoreless playoff in Tbilisi, to qualify for Euro 2024.

Georgia will be in a group with Turkey, Czechia and Portugal this summer.

Defeat means Gus Poyet – who’d been linked with the Ireland job – is out of contract next month with no Euros to save him with Greece.

Tonight’s friendly at Hampden may have consequences for Liverpool’s Premier League title ambitions.

Andy Robertson was withdrawn in the first half of Scotland’s game with Northern Ireland with what appeared to be an ankle injury.

Robertson’s Liverpool teammate Conor Bradley scored his first international goal to give Northern Ireland the lead there.
