Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has hailed Rio Ngoumohia's performance as a “perfect debut” after the 16-year-old scored the decisive goal late on against Newcastle.
The youngster came on as a substitute and scored in injury time during the Premier League clash at St James' Park, giving the champions a 3-2 comeback win. The Magpies, who were down a man, managed to overcome a 0-2 deficit but ultimately lost.
Van Dijk told Sky Sports: “It was a dream debut for him. The technique was impeccable. We kept our cool in the final stages, looked for the right moment to strike and got it. I am really happy for Rio.”
Despite goals from Gravenberch and Ekitieck, and Gordon's sending off, Liverpool were outperformed for long periods before taking the initiative.
The tension in the match was heightened by the Reds' failed negotiations over the transfer of Magpies striker Alexander Isak.
“Everyone understands how difficult it is to play here, especially after the events of this week, which have added a lot of spice to the game,” van Dijk commented.
“It's a shame to have conceded two goals from set pieces, but overall the three points are deserved. Now we'll focus on the next game.”
The Dutch defender expressed no regret over Gordon's sending off for a clash with him.
“I said: if it's not a red card, I don't understand football. These things happen, whether intentional or not,” he explained.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Newcastle's style made his team's game difficult.
“It's hard to call this a football match in the classic sense. Lots of set pieces, long throw-ins – tactics have faded into the background.”
“But I admire the team's resilience. The first 30-45 minutes were tough, but we didn't break and came out ahead.”
“Playing against ten opponents should have made things easier, but with the goalkeeper playing accurately it was difficult to maintain the advantage. This explains our struggle after the score was 2:0.”
Slot praised Ngumohi's contribution to the victory.
“An incredible goal for a 16-year-old. He took the chance perfectly. For his age, he shows rare composure in finishing.”
“His confidence is impressive – this goal is not a fluke. He has the qualities of a real goalscorer.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has admitted the bitterness of defeat.

“It was a tough test for our team. Lots of emotions, but I'm proud of the players – they showed incredible energy and involvement.”
“The game plan was executed clearly, especially after the sending off. We controlled the events in both the first and second half.”
“To leave without points while dealing with current injuries, disqualifications and other problems is an extremely unpleasant result.”
