Victoria Mboko wins first WTA Tour title with victory over Naomi Osaka

Canada's Victoria Mboko claimed her first WTA Tour title, denying Naomi Osaka her first title in four years at the National Bank Open.

The 18-year-old, ranked 85th in the world, won 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in Montreal, losing to the former world number one and becoming the third Canadian to win the tournament.

There were 13 breaks of serve in the final, with Mboko converting eight of her nine break point opportunities after failing to achieve a single one in the first set, making 22 unforced errors.

“It's been an amazing week,” said Mboko, who has previously knocked out Grand Slam champions Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina.

“I also want to thank Naomi for a great match. I've always admired her since I was a kid, so it's always great to play with such an outstanding player like you.

Having started the year in 333rd place, Mboko will rise to 34th place in the updated ranking.

Osaka's last title was at the 2021 Australian Open, her first at the WTA 1000 level since Miami in 2022 and her best performance since returning from maternity leave following the birth of her daughter Shai in July 2023.

By contrast, in the men's final in Toronto, American fourth-seeded Ben Shelton had just three breaks of serve in winning 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.

Second seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool defeated sixth seeds Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski 6-3, 6-7, 13-11 in the doubles final, held exclusively in Britain.

The victory, Cash and Glasspool's sixth this year and first at an ATP Masters 1000 event, ensured the Wimbledon champions became the first pair to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.

Cash told the ATP website: “Qualifying for Turin was one of our main goals in the off-season, so to achieve it so early is definitely great.

“But (we) still have a lot of work to do before the end of the season, and then we will try to finish
