Tottenham fear for James Maddison as injury mars Son Heung-min's farewell

James Maddison suffered a serious knee injury during Tottenham's pre-season tour of Asia, which ended with a draw with Newcastle in Seoul on Sunday.

The England player was carried off on a stretcher and appeared to be in severe pain after being left unchallenged late in the game.

The friendly, which ended 1-1, was particularly notable for the emotional reception given to the departing Son Heung-min by fans in his hometown.

Maddison, 28, missed the latter stages of last season, including the Europa League final, with a knee problem and his latest injury affected the same joint.

Manager Thomas Frank told reporters after the game: “I think sometimes in life and football things can be beautiful and cruel at the same time – and that's what we saw today.”

“It looks like Madders has a serious injury, but on the other hand, incredible scenes for Son from his team-mates and respect from the Newcastle players.”

Son, 33, confirmed this week that he will leave Tottenham this summer after a decade at the club.

The South Korean captain received a standing ovation and a guard of honour from players from both teams when he was substituted in the 64th minute.

Brennan Johnson's deflected strike gave Spurs the lead in the fourth minute but Harvey Barnes equalised before the break.

Son, who scored 173 goals in 454 official matches for the club, admitted that the event was emotional for him.

The striker also thanked new Tottenham boss Frank for his understanding as he told him he wanted to look for a new challenge.

Son told the club's website: “It was a perfect moment. I will never forget how we shared these beautiful moments and will always cherish it – from the fans, the players and the coach.”

“He understood my situation and was always on my side. He always listened to me and asked what I wanted to do. I have a lot of respect for him and a lot of gratitude.”
