The signing of Benjamin Cesko could determine Ruben Amorim's fate at Manchester United. Will he continue to sound the alarm or toil like others before him?

Benjamin Cesc is a promising player but has yet to prove his ability and his achievement could have a major impact on the reshaping of Manchester United under Ruben Amorim. Watch Manchester United v Arsenal live on Sky Sports in the Premier League this Sunday from 4pm; kick-off 4.30pm.

“It was difficult for us without a striker,” was how Ruben Amorim described Manchester United's final pre-season match against Fiorentina. “We have a new player, so we'll see how things go.” There is hope that Benjamin Cescó can turn things around.

The potential is obvious. He is 190 cm tall and also has good speed. He can head the ball and take powerful long-range shots. His marking is expected to improve and he will also help in defence, providing support for Amorim.

In short, Šeško looks unique. In an interview with Sky Sports' Matej Orazem, his former sporting director at Domžal, he said: “I am sure he is destined for greatness. It is not only about physical attributes, but also about technique. He will succeed wherever he plays.”

But the modern United have perhaps provided the ultimate test of that hypothesis. Ruben Amorim, who has been paid £73.7m, taking the summer spend on a new strike trio to more than £200m, has certainly been backed. That creates pressure to get going quickly.

Amorim has been candid about his good fortune to still be in charge, given the backing of the board after a string of poor results that have left United with their worst league finish in more than half a century. The general consensus is that the mood has changed.

Luke Shaw recently admitted that the atmosphere inside the club could be “extremely negative” and “quite toxic”, but then added that things were different now. The unhappy players had left. New ones had arrived, ready to prove their case. A cultural reset.

Time spent at the training ground has also been beneficial, and the lack of European football means there will be more of it throughout the campaign, giving Amorim the chance to show why he was initially tipped as the best young coach.

However, the summer spending is raising expectations. United are already fifth favourites to win the title. If they fail to qualify for Europe, they will miss two seasons in a row for the first time since the ban on English clubs was lifted.

The problem is that Cesko is not a done deal. At least not until United enter the market. And their first Premier League game of the season presents an intriguing contrast. Rivals Arsenal have long been interested in Cesko, and a move seemed inevitable.
