Hull City manager Willie Peters, whose win took his side one step closer to winning the League Leaders' Shield, believed some of his team's players had “deliberately” targeted Lewis.

Peters said: “I'm all for physical violence and of course there will be nuances, I understand that, but some things went way over the top. Given the way Lewis was treated, it's incredible that he kept his composure.”

“He's a key player and there will be a lot of attention on him, but you can't learn to live with being elbowed in the head.

“Accidents happen, but this is not an accident, this is a deliberate act. This must not happen again. We must protect him.”

Three Hull FC players have already been suspended following the violent clash, with Amir Buru and Yusuf Aydin given one-match sanctions and Jordan Rapana given two-match bans for two separate incidents, while Liam Watts was fined.

Rovers' Eribe Doro was penalised for a header but no further action will be taken against Elliott Minchella for the same offence.

Catalans Dragons' Frank Maria has been charged with a category E offence for head contact with Salford and will face a tribunal this week.

Warrington's Luke Yates and Salford's Logan Lewis have been handed two-match and three-match bans respectively and will now miss the rest of the season.
