Former England and Nottingham Forest defender Stuart Pearce is recovering in a Canadian hospital after suffering emergency treatment on a flight from the United States.
Commentator Sam Matterface, who works alongside Pearce on radio station talkSPORT, said the 62-year-old was in high spirits after his flight from Las Vegas to Heathrow was diverted to St John's Airport in Canada last weekend.
Pearce, who was in the US last Saturday to attend the Super League match between Wigan Athletic and his supporter Warrington, fell ill on the return flight on Virgin Atlantic and was forced to make an emergency landing after receiving medical attention.
“I spoke to him yesterday and he was in great spirits,” Matterface said from the City Ground ahead of Saturday's clash between Forest and Manchester City, another club Pearce has been linked with.
“He's not completely fine, that's for sure, but he's in the right place, he's in the hospital. The doctors are looking after his condition.
“He's a bit disappointed he couldn't go to the game today, he was really upset about it. He even said to me, 'I've got so much going on, I've had to cancel my plans because of it. There are some great games and Mumford and Sons are playing on Wednesday night and I can't go.'
“He was unhappy about it. Otherwise, he was in good spirits.”
Three minutes into the Premier League match, the message “Get well soon Stuart” appeared on the big screen at the City Ground, referring to his old shirt number, three.
