Saturday sport: Irish in action at Olympics, with early rowing success

There’s plenty of Irish interest this afternoon after a busy first morning of the Olympic Games in Paris.

Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle stormed to victory in their men’s double sculls heat.

They have a semi-final to look forward to on Tuesday.

Joining them in Tuesday’s action are Zoe Hyde and Alison Bergin – the pair came third in their women’s double sculls heat.

The dressage is ongoing at Versailles – Susie Berry on board Wellfields Lincoln is currently 13th following a 33-point penalty from her tests.

Earlier, Sarah Ennis picked up a 38-point penalty with Action Lady M to sit in 24th.

Austin O’Connor will take Colorado Blue through his tests just after 3.50pm Irish time.

The Ireland men’s hockey team opened up their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to defending champions Belgium.

In the pool, Ellen Walshe came sixth in her 100-metre butterfly heat this morning, missing out on a semi-final spot.

The women’s 4-by-100-metres freestyle relay team came eighth in their heat.

The men;s rugby sevens team must lift themselves after the disappointment of Thursday night, with a fifth-place play-off semi-final against the United States at 2pm.

Dean Clancy is the first Irish boxer into action, facing Jordan’s Obada Alkasbeh in the preliminary round of the men’s lightweight division just before 4.30pm.

GAA

Dublin are looking to reach a first All-Ireland Camogie final since 1986 today.

However, standing in their way are reigning champions Cork in the first of this afternoon’s semi-finals at Nowlan Park.

Galway have been champions three times this century, and take on Tipperary from 3pm.

Both intermediate Camogie semis are being played in Thurles this evening.

There’s a 4pm start to the meeting of Kilkenny and Kerry.

Cork and Offaly square-off from 6pm.

Golf

Padraig Harrington goes into today’s third round of the Senior Open just three-shots off the lead.

He’s 3-under par, and plays alongside Richard Green today at Carnoustie.

Korea’s K-J Choi leads on 6-under.
