Head coach Andy Farrell said the team had been rewarded for a strong build-up to the championship.

Scotland have retained the Calcutta Cup with a 29-23 victory over England.

Gregor Townsend’s side claimed a bonus point after scoring four tries at Twickenham.

It left Steve Borthwick defeated in his first match as England head coach.

Hurling

All-Ireland champions Limerick were defeated by Cork in their Allianz Hurling League clash at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Meanwhile, Kilkenny also got off to a winning start in Division One of the league.

The match at Corrigan Park finished Antrim 0-15, Kilkenny 1-18.

Elsewhere, Tipperary trounced Laois 2-32 0-18 at FBD Semple Stadium.

Ladies’ football

Kerry are top of Division One of the Lidl National Ladies Football League.

Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Síofra O’Shea found the net in the Kingdom’s 2-10 to 1-11 victory over Donegal.

Soccer

Manchester United have moved within eight points of Premier League leaders Arsenal after holding on with 10-men to beat Crystal Palace 2-1.

They were given a scare when Palace pulled a goal back in the second-half, following a red card for Casemiro.

Liverpool’s miserable run continued as they lost 3-0 at Wolves to stretch their run without a Premier League win to four games.

It was better news on the other side of Merseyside as Sean Dyche made a winning start as Everton manager with a 1-0 victory over Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Newcastle could not go back above Man United after being held 1-1 by West Ham at St James’ Park.

Rangers claimed a 2-1 victory over Ross County in the Scottish Premiership.
