Ruben Amorim believes Manchester United's improvement in yesterday's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal was down to the persistence and determination of their players rather than any tactical changes.
One of the team's brightest encounters in recent months did not yield any points: Altay Bayindir's mistake allowed Riccardo Calafiori to open the scoring early in the match, while Amorim's men failed to use any of their 22 scoring opportunities.
Despite the defeat, many Red Devils supporters left Old Trafford with optimism, praising the impact of new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in reviving the attacking play that had caused the Gunners problems for much of the game.
Since Amorim's appointment midway through last season, the team have struggled to adapt to his three-man defence, finishing the season in 15th place – their worst position in 51 years.
Asked about the tactical nuances that influenced Sunday's game, the specialist told MUTV: “Tactical formations are overrated. It's not about the formation. You saw how we varied the defence: five, four, three players. Most of the time we played in a 3v3 format.”
“It's all about the energy level of the players, their fearlessness, their skill and their physicality. We are showing progress.”
“There is a huge amount of work to be done. It is important to focus on the next step now. The players have become more aware of the principles required.”
“They are physically prepared and eager to support each other. It's inspiring.”
“Sometimes you see how a mistake or an inaccurate pass only unites the team even more.”
“We move on. Every tournament match in the Premier League is difficult. We begin preparing for the next challenge.”
Arsenal's victory was marred by concerns from Mikel Arteta over a disorganised performance, with his side struggling to cope with the onslaught of the Mancunians.
The visitors rarely controlled the game, which the Basque strategist likened to a “basketball match” – the frantic pace was more in keeping with United's style.
“It's important to remain humble but to admit it was a real battle,” Arteta commented.
“I wonder how many teams will be able to come here and leave with victories. For the opening round, the result is encouraging, but there is still work to do.”
Summer signing Victor Dioceres made his Arsenal debut but failed to impress and was substituted after an hour.
Asked about the Swedish recruit's first match, the coach noted: “There are positive aspects. This is especially true for the high pressing and the tempo we achieved in the first half, although we allowed the opponent too much space.”
“We need to work on this, especially in the conditions of such tournaments…
“His potential has not been fully realised. However, the away win against Manchester United in the opening round is a decent foundation.”
