Rory McIlroy 'turns down' opportunity to be Ryder Cup playing captain: 'I don't think you can do it'

Rory McIlroy has confirmed he has no interest in captaining a Ryder Cup team but would have considered the opportunity 20 years ago.

Rory McIlroy has already “rejected” the possibility of combining the roles of Ryder Cup player and captain, saying: “I don't think it's realistic.”

The 36-year-old golfer will compete in his eighth Ryder Cup in Bethpage in September as Europe attempts to defend the trophy on American soil for the first time since 2012 and the 'Miracle at Medinah'.

The ability to juggle the two roles could be challenging for U.S. captain Keegan Bradley, who is currently ranked 10th on the country's qualifying list.

“I've thought about being a playing captain in the near future but I've immediately dismissed the idea because I don't think it's feasible,” said McIlroy, who led Europe in scoring in the victory in Rome two years ago.

“If someone had said that 20 years ago I would probably have agreed, but given the size of the event and the Ryder Cup being on the line now, I think it would be extremely difficult to be in that situation.”

“Think about the extra meetings captains need to have with vice-captains, with the PGA of America, in Keegan’s case, preparing the opening ceremony speech.

“The captain will actually only be able to play one session on Friday and one on Saturday. Would you rather not have a player who can play twice if he plays well?

“Look, this is just my opinion, but I think this is going to be extremely difficult to implement.”
