Reece James's superb free-kick puts England on course to beat Latvia

Reece James's stunning free-kick set England on course for a second World Cup qualifying win in four days as Thomas Tuchel's side comfortably beat Latvia.

Sir Gareth Southgate's successor began his reign with a comfortable 2-0 win over Albania on Friday and ended his first campaign with triumph in the first ever senior men's meeting between the two countries.

James's first international goal was followed by all-time top scorer Harry Kane's 71st for his country, while substitute Eberechi Eze opened his international goal account as Latvia were beaten 3-0 at Wembley.

Whether Tuchel got the qualities he wanted after the win over Albania remains an open question, but the world's fourth-best team failed to fully assess their progress against an opponent ranked 140th.

Vladislav Gutkovskis could have put the modest visitors ahead but was unable to capitalise on mistakes from Jordan Pickford and Marc Guehi, after which James repaid Tuchel for the faith shown in him by starting for England for the first time since 2022 and successfully taking a free-kick.

England continued to attack the well-prepared Latvia goal, with Kane heading in Declan Rice's cross before Eze saw the ball bounce past Antonis Cernomordijs to continue their winning start to Group K.

Tuchel made four changes from Friday and his side started the game in the same way as against Albania, controlling the ball early on and patiently trying to break through a tight defence.

There were no clear chances early in the first half and there was another mix-up involving Pickford.

This time the goalkeeper and Guehi were unable to clear the ball on the edge of the penalty area, and after a quick shot from Gutkovskis from an acute angle, the ball did not go into an empty goal, but into the side net.

It was a miss that England could have capitalised on within minutes had Latvian goalkeeper Krisjanis Zviedris not saved Ezri Konsa's close-range effort.
