Newcastle sign former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius on short-term contract

Newcastle have completed the signing of former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius on a deal until January.

Karius was a free agent after his Liverpool contract expired in the summer.

The German had not played for Liverpool since Alisson arrived in 2018, spending the last two years on loan at Besiktas and Union Berlin.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe told the club website: “We are pleased to add Loris to our goalkeeping group.

“He is a very good goalkeeper with Premier League and European experience and he will provide competition and support over an important part of the season.”

Newcastle have also confirmed they do not expect Darlow to be out for the long-term, but that 29-year-old Karius will add to their goalkeeping options with Mark Gillespie, their current third choice, yet to make his debut since signing in 2020.

Howe is unable to recall Martin Dubravka until January under the terms of his Deadline Day loan move to Manchester United

Karius’ Liverpool struggles

Karius joined Liverpool from Mainz in 2016 but fell down the pecking order at Anfield when Alisson was signed as the club’s No 1 goalkeeper just two years later.

The German struggled to make his mark at Liverpool and his poor showing in their 2018 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid effectively cost him his career at the club as loan moves to Turkey and Germany followed.
