FA Cup holders Crystal Palace secured their second major Wembley win in less than three months by beating Liverpool in the Community Shield.
This result raised an important question for the Reds' head coach Arne Slot.
Slot makes a case for its defense
Liverpool manager Arne Slot admits his side need to improve their defence if they are to remain in contention for the Premier League title.
Despite Crystal Palace taking the lead twice in the Community Shield, sloppy central defence allowed Palace to equalise twice, leading to a penalty shootout which the Eagles won 3-2.
Questions have been raised about whether Slot need a new centre-back, with Palace's Marc Guehi in the final year of his contract. The sale of Jarrell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen has left just three centre-backs in the position.
Liverpool have failed to keep a clean sheet in pre-season, conceding 10 goals in five major fixtures including four against Milan, and Slott knows that needs to be addressed.
“I think at the moment we are able to create more chances but we are also conceding more and if you want to fight for the league, one of the main principles is not to concede, let alone score,” he told TNT Sports.
