Mark Chapman 'to be first of new trio to host Match of the Day'

Mark Chapman will become the BBC's first ever presenter of Saturday match review programme Match of the Day next weekend, according to the PA news agency.

The 51-year-old is part of a three-person hosting line-up alongside Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan, who will take turns hosting the show this season following the departure of previous presenter Gary Lineker.

PA reports that Chapman will be the first of the trio to front the main Saturday night show.

Cates is expected to host Wednesday's programme, which will include a look at key moments from the UEFA Super Cup and predictions for the new Premier League season which starts on Friday night, while Logan will take over the hosting of Sunday night's Match Of The Day this week.

On January 15, the BBC announced that Cates, Chapman and Logan would be the presenters after weeks of speculation about who would take over Lineker's position following his retirement announcement last year.

The 64-year-old had long planned for the final Match of the Day broadcast last season, which aired on May 26, to be his final highlights programme, but he had intended to stay on to host the BBC's live FA Cup and 2026 World Cup coverage.

However, earlier this month he announced his departure amid a social media controversy over a post he made about Zionism that included an image of a rat, historically used as an anti-Semitic trope.

Lineker, the BBC's highest-paid presenter and the host of Match Of The Day since 1999, apologised unreservedly for his post but said it would be “best for all concerned” if he stepped down completely.
