Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes is unhappy with referee Chris Kavanagh's lack of apology

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said he was “disappointed” by the lack of an apology from referee Chris Kavanagh after a collision before a penalty in the 1-1 draw with Fulham, but stressed he did not blame the referee for his miss.

Fernandes converted a penalty in the first half immediately after an incident with the referee at the start of the attack.

Neither team had managed to score at that point. United took the lead in the second half through a Rodrigo Muñiz own goal, but Emile Smith Rowe later equalised to give Fulham a draw.

The Portugal midfielder told Sky Sports: “I was disappointed. Of course, like any penalty taker, I have certain rituals.

“You have your own habits. I was upset that the judge didn't apologize, and that pissed me off at the time.

“But that's no excuse for missing the penalty. I just used too much force. I overdrew the ball with my foot and it went over the goal.”

Head coach Ruben Amorim admitted that a missed penalty, awarded after referee Calvin Bassey fouled Mason Mount during a set piece, affected his captain's condition in the game.

Amorim continued: “I think he’s not used to not scoring penalties.

“He understands the importance of every moment in an environment like this and his ability to impact the team in a very significant way.

“And I felt that during the meeting he was not so happy, not so involved, because he felt a huge burden of responsibility.

“And I think he got the idea that the failed penalty was a turning point for our team.”
