Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool that signing Aleksandr Isak will not secure them the Premier League title.
The Reds won the title by 10 points last season and have since invested almost £300m in new players.
Newcastle also rejected a £110m bid for Isak, but the Swedish striker's future remains unclear.
Asked if he thought Liverpool would ultimately be successful in their pursuit of Isak, Sky Sports pundit and former Reds defender Carragher replied: “Yes, I think so, but I don't understand why people are saying Liverpool are going to get him.”
Carragher pointed to Liverpool's Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace as an example of how players such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitikey will need time to prove themselves.
“If you look at history, it's not just about having the best players, it's about building a strong team and getting the balance right. But it didn't look right at the weekend,” he said.
I think we are going to be fighting for the title and there seems to be a lot of talk about that. The great thing about football is what we saw against Liverpool on Sunday. It didn't look right.
