Dean Burmester overcame a tough start to make it into a triple playoff and then beat Jon Rahm and Josele Ballester on the first extra hole to make a six-foot birdie putt to win the LIV Golf Chicago title.

Burmester squandered a two-shot lead early with three straight bogeys. He rallied late in the round to post an even-par 71 to finish nine under on 204.

The South African made birdie on the 16th hole to retake the lead, but Rahm and Ballester also made birdies on the 18th hole to force a playoff. On the 18th hole, Ballester and Rahm failed to convert birdie opportunities from 12 feet out.

“I think about my kids and my wife back home and just trying to do the best I can for them. My wife ran an ultramarathon this week in West Virginia.

“That Sunday I was watching her through my phone and it really inspired me: if she can do it, run 90 kilometers in a day, in nine and a half hours or whatever, then I can do it too.”

Burmester earned £2.97 million ($4 million) for his second LIV Golf win, following his victory in Miami last year.

There was also a team playoff, in which Burmester's Stinger team defeated Torque for the team title.

Joaquin Niemann tied for 17th place, maintaining his lead over Rahm in the individual standings. Niemann has never finished in the top 10 at LIV Golf, aside from seven wins.
