England forward Jesse Lingard talks tactics, penalties and Radamel Falcao as he faces the media before the last-16 game against Colombia on Tuesday.

Jesse Lingard has described Gareth Southgate’s introduction as England manager as “like a new revolution” ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup last-16 tie with Colombia.

Southgate has been widely praised for his innovative approach since taking over as national boss and has implemented a three-man centre-back combination that his players appear to be comfortable with.

Manchester United forward Lingard has praised the positive approach Southgate has had on the side as they continue their preparations ahead of the game with Colombia in Moscow.

“It feels like a new revolution. The manager’s come in with great ideas, the formation suits us perfectly,” said Lingard.

“It’s a youthful squad but we’ve still got those experienced players in there. The team spirit is amazing.”

Lingard, who scored arguably England’s best goal of the tournament in the 6-1 drubbing of Panama during the group stages, confirmed they have been practising penalties in training but are yet to finalise their spot-kick plans.

Asked if the squad had a plan of who would take penalties in a shoot-out, Lingard said: “Not at this current moment.

1:27 Rob Dorsett reveals the England players believe they can win the World Cup and are targeting victory in Russia.

“Of course, we are practising them at training and what not. There is not really a set five [takers] yet, but everyone is confident enough to go over and take one.

“We don’t need to change too much. No matter what round we are in we are going to play with no fear and play with that freedom. Why change?”

Lingard was also asked about Colombia striker Radamel Falcao, who had an unsuccessful loan spell at Old Trafford in the 2014/15 season.

“He’s a great finisher,” Lingard said. “In and around the box, he’s lethal. We will be aware of that.”
