Hungarian Grand Prix Qualifying Highlights

Charles Leclerc surprised McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to take Ferrari's first pole position of the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Leclerc beat Piastri by 0.026 seconds, disappointing McLaren, who had hoped to take the top positions and dominate qualifying in Budapest.

Norris was just 0.041s behind pole position Leclerc as McLaren encountered a wind change in Q3 that gave their rivals an opening.

George Russell will start Sunday's race (which starts at 2pm on Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports Main Event) from fourth position, while Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso shared his best qualifying result of the year in fifth.

His team-mate Lance Stroll finished sixth ahead of Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto, while Max Verstappen could only manage eighth after a disappointing weekend at Red Bull.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton was left dejected after failing to make Q3 at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

It wasn't all plain sailing for Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton's poor qualifying form continuing with an exit from Q2, leaving him in 12th place behind Liam Lawson and Isaac Hajjar of the Racing Bulls, as well as Haas' Oliver Biermann in 11th.

Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda crashed out of Q1 for the fifth time this season, while Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli disappointed again with a 15th-place finish on Saturday.

How Leclerc surprised McLaren in a tense Q3

Piastri and Norris dominated until the latter part of qualifying, leading all three practice sessions as well as Q1 and Q2.

After the first runs of the third stage they occupied first and second positions, although both drivers were noticeably struggling with the control on the corners, with Piastri ahead of Norris.
