Newcastle ended a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.
Dan Byrne and Alexander Isak put the Magpies 2-0 ahead before substitute Federico Chiesa reduced the deficit late on.
However, they did manage to lift their first domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup, and here PA news agency looks at the matches that led to that achievement.
Second round: v Nottingham Forest (a) 1-1 (4-3 on penalties), 28 August
On a night when Italian Sandro Tonali returned from a 10-month international ban for betting offences, the Magpies took an early lead through Joe Willock, but Jota Silva levelled in the second half and Sean Longstaff converted the winning penalty in the decider.
Third round: v AFC Wimbledon (h) 1-0, 1 October
The game, originally due to be played at the League Two club's Cherry Red Records stadium a week ago, was moved to St James' Park due to severe flooding. A much-changed Newcastle cruised into the fourth round with little momentum. Fabian Schar's cool penalty ensured they went through in front of 51,739.
Fourth round: v Chelsea (h) 2-0, 30 October
Having been knocked out of the competition at the quarter-final stage by the Blues last season despite leading 1-0 into the dying minutes of normal time, the Magpies were keen for revenge. Just three days after losing 2-1 in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge, Alexander Isak's strike and an Axel Disasi own goal within three minutes of the first half proved decisive against a very different Chelsea side.
Quarter-final: v Brentford (h) 3-1, 18 December
Tonali underlined his growing influence in Eddie Howe's side with two first-half goals to send Newcastle into the semi-finals with confidence. The Ball extended their lead with 21 minutes remaining before Yoane Wissa reduced the deficit.
Semi-final, first leg: v Arsenal (a) 2-0, 7 January
The Magpies arrived at the Emirates Stadium having won just one of their 19 previous visits but left with a good chance of reaching the final. Isaac was the hero again with a fine first-half strike and Anthony Gordon doubled the lead after his shot was saved by David Raya to put his side back on Tyneside with a comfortable lead.
Semi-final, second leg: v Arsenal (h) 2-0, 5 February
The Toon army had to wait almost a month to celebrate and get over the finishing line on Tyneside, but their nerves were calmed by another brilliant performance. Jacob Murphy and Gordon scored on the stroke of half-time to put the Gunners 14 years behind the famous 4-4 league draw between the sides at St James'.
