Dutch Grand Prix Highlights from Zandvoort

McLaren's 2025 season is set to be one of the most successful in Formula 1 history, but how successful could it be and what records is the team aiming to break in the remaining nine Italian Grand Prix races?

With the dominance of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris making it all but certain that they will win both the Drivers' and Constructors' World Championships this season, we look at some of the potential historic dates the team could offer between now and the season finale in Abu Dhabi in December.

How soon can McLaren win the constructors' title?

The question was not whether McLaren would retain the constructors' title, which they won for the first time in 26 years last year at the start of the Formula 1 season, but when.

Twelve Grand Prix wins and seven victories in the first 15 races of the season ensured that McLaren would secure their landmark tenth Constructors' Championship well ahead of 2024, when they finally beat Ferrari at the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.

Piastri and Norris' relentless podium finishes saw them extend their lead over second-placed Ferrari to 324 points after the Dutch Grand Prix, despite the Briton's brutal retirement at Zandvoort.

Constructors' Cup: Top 4

Team Glasses Gap
1) McLaren 584
2) Ferrari 260 +324
3) Mercedes 248 +336
4) Red Bull 214 +370

So how soon can they get it done this time?

Well, over the final nine Grand Prix weekends, including three sprints, teams will have a maximum of 432 points to play for.

Mathematically, they will most likely be able to retain the constructors' crown at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 21.

To be crowned champions again in Baku, they would have to be 346 points ahead of the second-placed team by the end of that Grand Prix weekend – 22 points more than they currently are.

And such an advantage is certainly possible, given that formidable McLaren have increased their lead in the Constructors' Championship by an average of 29 points over the last three non-sprint weekends.

While there are many options, two first or second places, regardless of how their rivals perform in the next two races, would definitely guarantee the coronation in Baku.

If their pace of progress had slowed, they would certainly have won the title in two weeks' time in Singapore, given that they would have needed to finish the race with a lead of just 303 points – 21 points less than where they currently lead.

As things stand, it is unlikely that the constructors' title race will go to the USA-Mexico two-legged tie at the end of October.

What records can McLaren break?

Constructors' Championship Champions with the most races remaining

Record – 6 (Red Bull, 2023)

If McLaren had indeed finished the race in Baku, at the 17th round of the season, they would have become the first team to become constructors' champion with seven race weekends remaining in the season.

Red Bull set a new record with six Grands Prix remaining when they win the title in 2023.

Most points in a season

Record: 860 (Red Bull, 2023); McLaren's current result is 584.

Firstly, it is worth noting the numerous caveats associated with points records in Formula 1.

The constant addition of more Grands Prix to the calendar, as well as the recent introduction of points-scoring sprints and changes to the sport's scoring system (the last fundamental overhaul of which took place in 2010) means that comparing riders' and teams' performances throughout history is far from always a fair comparison.

However, the relevant records are still there in the history books and therefore can be broken, and McLaren could break Red Bull's 860 points mark for a season, set as recently as 2023, when they won all but one of that year's 22 Grands Prix.

Norris was left heartbroken as his title hopes were dealt a crushing blow after retiring from the Dutch Grand Prix.

Red Bull's average per-race points over those 22 rounds was 39.09, while McLaren's was 38.9 over the first 15 rounds of the year. If they maintain that result, they will break the 900-point barrier for the first time.

Largest difference in victories among constructors

Record: 451 points (Red Bull, 2023); McLaren's current lead is 324 points.

McLaren could break another record stolen from Red Bull, helped by the fact that there are two more Grands Prix than there were two years ago. Given how the Woking team has dominated this year with two frontrunners, it's another feat that is within reach.

Most podiums in a season

Record: 33 (Mercedes, 2016); McLaren's current result is 25.

It's a record that certainly needs to be broken, given that McLaren cars are still able to challenge for 18 podiums this season, and the team is just nine short of beating Mercedes' 2016 tally of 21 rounds.

Norris and Piastri failed to finish on the podium only three times all season, and the race in Canada was the only one where neither of them finished in the top three.

Fastest laps of the season

Record: 14 (Ferrari, 2004); McLaren's current result is 10.

Fastest laps in a race no longer carry bonus points, so their significance has diminished, but with 67 per cent of them going to one of the two papaya cars this season, McLaren have a chance to pick up another five points this campaign and set a new record.

Norris takes first home win at Silverstone, pipping McLaren team-mate Piastri

Most wins for McLaren in a season

Record: 15 (1988, in 16 races), McLaren's current total is 12

While they certainly won't be able to beat the near-perfect percentage of 1988, McLaren will likely take more wins this year than they ever have in a single campaign.

However, they will have to win all nine remaining races to equal Red Bull's overall Formula 1 record of 21 wins in 2023.
