Hiromasa Urakawa became the second boxer to die after participating in the same tournament in Japan.

Two boxers, Shigetoshi Kotari and Hiromasa Urakawa, died after competing in the same event at Tokyo's Korakuen Hall; the Japan Boxing Commission announced that all Eastern and Pacific Boxing Federation title fights would be shortened from 12 to 10 rounds.

Hiromasa Urakawa became the second boxer to die from head injuries sustained at the same event in Tokyo.

The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) confirmed the death of Japanese boxer Urakawa aged 28 on Sunday following his fight with Yoji Saito on August 2.

This came just days after Shigetoshi Kotari, who had drawn with Yamato Hata at the same tournament in Tokyo, died from head injuries.

“The WBO mourns the passing of Japanese boxer Hiromasa Urakawa, who tragically passed away from injuries sustained during his fight with Yoji Saito on August 2 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo,” the WBO said.

“This sad news comes just days after the death of Shigetoshi Kotari, who died from injuries sustained in a fight at the same tournament.

“We express our sincere condolences to the families, friends and the Japanese boxing community during this extremely difficult time.”

Lightweight Urakawa has 14 professional fights (10-4, 7 KOs), while Tokyo featherweight Kotari has 12 fights (8-2-2, 5 KOs).

Following this, the Japan Boxing Commission announced that all title fights in the Eastern and Pacific Boxing Federations would be shortened from 12 to 10 rounds.
