Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah and Sergio Aguero are battling it out for Premier League’s Golden Boot but who will win the accolade? We asked the Soccer Saturday pundits for their verdict.
Two-time holder Kane leads the way again on 23 goals and is naturally considered Sky Bet’s favourite in the top goalscorer betting with 11 games remaining.
Premier League top scorers so far in 2017/18
Harry Kane | Tottenham | 23 |
Mo Salah | Liverpool | 22 |
Sergio Aguero | Man City | 21 |
Raheem Sterling | Man City | 15 |
Jamie Vardy | Leicester | 13 |
However, Salah, on 22 goals, and Aguero, with one less, are hot on the England star’s heels and are given 3/1 and 7/2 chances of finishing top of the charts.
Here’s who Soccer Saturday pundits Phil Thompson, Paul Merson, Charlie Nicholas and Matt Le Tissier are backing…
Thommo says: Harry Kane
I’m sticking with my pick from the start of the season. Manchester City look set to go far in the Champions League so when Gabriel Jesus is back he’ll share the minutes with Aguero. Salah will give them a good run but he tends to score single goals whereas Kane gets a lot of hat-tricks.
It is just absolutely phenomenal what Salah is doing though. We haven’t seen a winger score this amount of goals since Cristiano Ronaldo was in the Premier League. It looks extremely close and I actually wouldn’t be surprised if Salah has missed more good chances than Kane, who is just clinical.
Merse says: Sergio Aguero
I know Aguero won’t be playing as many minutes as the others with the Champions League becoming the focus for Manchester City, but I don’t know anyone else who can get four goals in a match on multiple occasions. Manchester City score bundles of goals so I’ve just got to go with him.
I think Salah is in contention but it’s a big ask for a winger to do it. He’s not an out-and-out centre-forward so it would be a phenomenal feat for him. Kane has proved he can score big goals in big games but Tottenham don’t blow teams away like Manchester City.
Charlie says: Harry Kane
It is very hard to look beyond Kane. He’s so consistent in just picking up goals every week. Not only does he get lots of goals against the lesser teams but he also scores in the big games now.
I always think Aguero has that danger of a hamstring injury looming if he plays too many games, so Pep will want to protect him for other competitions as they go for the quadruple. Salah could be clear of the other two with the chances he’s missed, but I think if you were going to have a bet on it then you couldn’t look beyond Kane.
Le Tiss says: Harry Kane
When Jesus comes back then I think Aguero’s match time will be significantly less than Kane’s. Salah is on such a run that you cannot rule him out, but as a winger you wouldn’t expect him to be in as many goalscoring positions.
If Aguero was going to be the first choice for every game for the rest of the season I would nudge towards him. However, if I could sign one player to come in and save Southampton, then I would go for Kane as he is a better all-round striker with his ability to hold up the ball and win physical battles.
