Fresh violence disrupts PSG's Champions League celebrations

Paris police said 79 more people had been arrested as violence continued to disrupt celebrations of Paris Saint-Germain's historic Champions League victory.

A second night of incidents followed after more than 100,000 fans greeted PSG players in Paris following their 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the Champions League final on Saturday.

Paris police chief Laurent Nunez told RTL radio that groups of people had been gathering near the Parc des Princes stadium and on the Champs-Elysees after midnight, causing trouble.

Some used barriers to block the main ring road around Paris for a time, while other troublemakers set off fireworks and tried to loot shops, he said.

Mr Nunez said calm was restored at 3.30am on Monday.

PSG had earlier organised a parade of their fans on open buses in the city. The holders of European club football's most prestigious trophy arrived in Paris on Sunday afternoon and headed down France's most famous avenue, the Champs-Elysees, where violence and clashes with police trying to quell unrest broke out on Saturday night.

Police made more than 500 arrests across the country on Saturday evening.

“The total number of arrests is incredibly high, it's absolutely unprecedented,” Mr. Nunez said.

The celebrations were largely peaceful, but in some areas they turned violent.

Police said a 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in the western city of Dax during a street party after the final, while a 20-year-old man died in Paris when his scooter was hit by a car.
