It was another busy day of Premier League action on Saturday with action at both ends of the table.
While Mohamed Salah continued his amazing record in front of goal for Liverpool, West Brom’s misery went on at the bottom.
Here, we pick out five of the best stats from Saturday’s games…
Salah’s deadly left foot
Mohamed Salah was among the goals yet again as Liverpool moved up to second in the Premier League table thanks to their 4-1 win over West Ham at Anfield. Salah got Liverpool’s second with Emre Can, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane also among the goals.
Salah’s strike puts him level with Harry Kane on 23 Premier League goals for the season but it is the number of left-footed goals that he has scored that cannot be matched. Salah is the first player in Premier League history to score 20 goals in a single season with his left foot.
Pardew’s dismal record
If Alan Pardew was hoping for a response from his players on their return to Premier League action following the shenanigans in Spain, he did not get it. West Brom’s 2-1 defeat at home to Huddersfield leaves them rooted to the foot of the table with any hope of survival fading.
Albion have picked up only eight points in their 14 Premier League games under Pardew. It is a record that compares unfavourably even with what went before – the Baggies earned 12 points from the previous 14 games this season. The situation looks bleak.
Shaqiri’s scoring streak
Stoke were unable to hold onto their lead and had to settle for a 1-1 draw away to Leicester in the early kick-off but at least star man Xherdan Shaqiri is delivering. He found the net late in the first half and has now scored in each of his last three Premier League appearances.
It is the first time that the former Bayern Munich player has achieved that feat in any of Europe’s major leagues and with Stoke still in the relegation zone, Potters boss Paul Lambert will be counting on the Switzerland international to maintain his fine form.
Burnley’s bad run goes on
Sean Dyche’s Burnley are on a similarly poor run of form themselves. Of course, the Clarets remain in seventh thanks to their extraordinarily good start to the campaign but they are still waiting for their first Premier League win of 2018 after Saturday’s draw at Turf Moor.
Burnley had looked set for that long-awaited win when Ashley Barnes bundled home but Manolo Gabbiadini’s second-half equaliser earned Southampton a 1-1 draw. Dyche’s men have now gone 11 Premier League games without a win – their worst run in eight years.
Brighton’s four-goal haul
One record of the right kind was set by Brighton as they stormed to a 4-1 win over in-form Swansea at the Amex Stadium. Glenn Murray scored twice before Anthony Knockaert and January arrival Jurgen Locadia put the seal on a vital victory.
This was the first time that Brighton have scored four goals in a Premier League game. That it came against a Swansea side that had been unbeaten in the previous 10 matches in all competitions under Carlos Carvalhal will give Chris Hughton’s team real confidence.
