The road to Germany and Euro 2024 continues in October. Here’s the state of play during the latest set of matches, with Scotland missing the chance to qualify against Spain…

Who qualifies for Euro 2024?

Two teams – the group winners and runners-up – will qualify automatically from each of the 10 groups.

Three teams will then qualify via the play-offs, which will be contested by 12 teams selected on the basis of their performance in the most recent Nations League.

Germany, as hosts, are the only country currently certain to be one of the 24 nations in action at next summer’s tournament.

State of play

Group A

Scotland’s wait for Euro 2024 qualification continues after Spain inflicted their first defeat of the campaign as they claimed a 2-0 victory in Seville.

After a perfect start in Group A, the Scots only needed a draw to secure their place in Germany next summer, and following an impressive first-half defensive display they looked firmly on course to achieve that.

Scott McTominay thought he had fired Scotland ahead in the second half only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside before Alvaro Morata headed the hosts ahead.

Ryan Porteous’ own goal then added to Scotland’s woes as their wait to secure back-to-back European Championship qualifications continues for a few days at least.

Their fate now rests with the Spaniards – if they avoid defeat to Norway on Sunday, Steve Clarke’s side are off to Germany.

Scotland’s final qualifiers are away to Georgia on November 16 and at home to Norway three days later.

Group B

The Republic of Ireland‘s automatic qualification hopes from Group B are over.

Stephen Kenny’s side could still make it to next summer’s tournament via the play-offs but that looks highly unlikely given their poor Nations League ranking.

Their home loss to Greece leaves Ireland second bottom in Group B with their only win in six qualifying games against minnows Gibraltar, adding more pressure to beleaguered boss Kenny.

Meanwhile, Greece are now three points clear of the Netherlands, who have a game in hand, in second.

France sealed their place in Germany with a 2-0 win over Netherlands.

Group C

England will qualify for the finals if they beat Italy on Tuesday at Wembley.

Although both Ukraine and Italy would be able to match England’s 16 points in that scenario, they face each other in their final game in November, meaning at least one will drop points before the end of the qualification group.

Group D

Wales’ qualification hopes are still intact – but only just. Turkey’s shock win in Croatia on Thursday night damaged Welsh prospects of claiming a top-two place in Group D.

Wales must now realistically beat top seeds Croatia in Cardiff on Sunday and finish with wins over Armenia and Turkey next month to qualify for Euro 2024.

By doing so, Wales would qualify for a third successive major tournament – two European Championships either side of the 2022 World Cup.

Turkey will progress to the finals if they beat Latvia in their next fixture and Wales do not beat Croatia. Turkey will also qualify if they draw and Wales lose. Wales will be out of contention to finish in the top two if they lose and Turkey do not.

Group E

A thrilling four-horse race. Albania remain top of Group E after beating Czech Republic 3-0 on matchday seven. In the previous round, Moldova overcame the Faroe Islands to keep themselves firmly in the equation.

The hopes of the Faroe Islands are officially over following their 2-0 home defeat to Poland on Thursday.

Group F

Belgium sealed their progress to the Euro 2024 finals with a 3-2 win away against second-placed Austria.

Meanwhile, Austria will qualify themselves if they beat Azerbaijan on Monday.

Group G

Hungary have their destiny firmly in their own hands, with a three-point gap at the top of Group G after beating Serbia on Saturday. If second-placed Serbia fail to win against Montenegro on Tuesday, then victory against Lithuania on the same evening would send them to Germany.

Group H

Northern Ireland cannot qualify automatically from Group H after wins for Slovenia and Denmark on Saturday, but still maintain a slim hope of reaching the finals through the play-offs.

Nothing can be settled through Tuesday’s games as Kazakhstan and Finland face one another, but another three points each for Denmark and Slovenia would as good as send them through.

Group I

There is greater clarity to Group I with Switzerland leading Romania by one point as the only remaining nations unbeaten.

Romania missed the chance to go above the Swiss on Thursday after being held by Belarus. Switzerland were due to play Israel on the same day, but both of Israel’s matches in October have been postponed due to the ongoing conflict.

Group J

Portugal have also completed the job of qualification for Euro 2024 after a 3-2 victory as they defeated Slovakia in Porto.

Slovakia, Luxembourg, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland will battle to finish second in the group behind Portugal on Monday.

What about the play-offs?

Each country that won their Nations League group makes it automatically into the play-offs, unless they progress to the tournament itself by finishing in the top two of their qualifying group.

In that situation, the next best nation in the respective league will take their play-off place, with this decided by the following criteria: position in the group, points and goal difference.

The draw for the play-offs takes place in November 2023, with the play-off semi-finals and finals being played between March 21 and 26, 2024.

When is the tournament?

The final tournament draw will take place in December 2023 at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

The teams will be seeded in accordance with the overall European Qualifiers rankings. Germany will be automatically seeded into pot 1 as hosts, and placed in position A1.

The three play-off winners will not be known at the time of the draw but will be placed into pot 4 for the draw.

The opening game of Euro 2024 is June 14 with the final taking place on July 14 at the Olympiastadion, Berlin.
