Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has confirmed he has turned down a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia as he seeks to “stay at the highest level”.
The 30-year-old midfielder has been linked with a possible £100million move to Al-Hilal, with the Saudi Pro League club reportedly willing to pay him £700,000-a-week.
However, Fernandes confirmed he had rejected the possibility of a move after speaking with Ruben Amorim and his family.
“The president of Al Hilal called me a month ago to discuss the possibility of my transfer there,” Fernandes said at a press conference in Portugal, according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo.
“I needed some time to think about the future. As I said, I would be willing to consider this option if the club felt it was the best solution.
“I spoke to Ruben Amorim, who really tried to dissuade me from taking this step.
“I discussed it with the club and they said they were not going to sell me unless I wanted to leave the team myself.
“From my side, it was a very ambitious proposal, the president turned out to be a wonderful person. I never raised the issue of money, this became known later, through my agent.
“I had to make a decision as a family and figure out what I wanted for my future. It was a question my wife asked me about my career goals. She never said yes or no, she always supported me and put my career first.
“It was an easy decision, even for the family. I have friends like Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo. My children are used to playing with their children.
“But I just want to stay at the highest level, play in big tournaments, because I still feel capable of it.
