Beto completes Everton's routine cup win over League One side Mansfield

Charlie Alcaraz and second-half substitute Beto scored goals as Everton progressed to the third round of the League Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over League One side Mansfield.

Alcaraz added momentum to the game with a brilliant strike six minutes after the break, and Beto sealed the team's victory with a late goal at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton's second game at the new ground was a less tense affair than the memorable win over Brighton last weekend.

Despite the fact that Nigel Clough's charges from Mansfield created almost no problems for the seemingly confident line-up of the visitors, the hosts controlled the game without unnecessary risks.

After a 15-minute delay to accommodate spectators before the first match under floodlights, the teams took a long time to warm up.

The Mansfield fans provided the bulk of the support from the stands and it was not until the 13th minute that the home side began to look dangerous when Alcaraz forced Liam Roberts into the game.

Roberts later saved Dwight McNeil's penalty and Jack Grealish fired the ball over the bar.

Harrison Armstrong charged towards goal just before the break but his shot hit Roberts.

Grealish tested the keeper again after a rest and the turning point soon followed as James Garner assisted Alcaraz, who fired a spectacular shot into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

The Toffees almost extended their lead when Seamus Coleman found himself one-on-one but the ball went out of bounds before he could get a shot off.

On the hour mark, Everton brought on new signing Tyler Dibling, who joined from Southampton for £35million this week.

His appearance was greeted with applause but the Mansfield fans continued to get louder, particularly after Luke Bolton's powerful strike was saved for a corner by James Tarkowski.

Beto also had a chance to score, but was no better than Roberts, while another substitute, Iliman Ndiaye, missed the target.

However, Beto did not miss the chance and finished the attack with a precise hit from close range after another pass from Armstrong.
