Paul McGinley explains the issues he feels Rory McIlroy needs to address if he wants to rediscover the form that earned him four majors and the world No 1 ranking.
Rory McIlroy has now gone almost four years without a major victory and has just missed the cut at the US Open for the third year running, but should his form be setting alarm bells ringing?
McIlroy gave himself a great chance to complete a career grand slam of majors at the Masters in April when he played his way into Sunday’s final pairing with Patrick Reed, but an error-strewn 74 left him six shots behind the champion.
The 29-year-old had arrived at Augusta National in good spirits following his superb victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March – his first silverware since landing the Tour Championship and FedExCup glory on the eve of the Ryder Cup in 2016.
But, as Paul McGinley explained before McIlroy teed off for his second round at Shinnecock Hills, the world No 6 needs to rediscover the attitude that swept him to four major victories and multiple titles worldwide as he enters the next phase of his career.

It is not all bad news, with McIlroy second only to Dustin Johnson in world ranking points accumulated in 2018, but while his technical ability remains sound, he needs to find a way to combat the increased competition as well as getting to grips with tough golf courses in tough conditions – with his opening 80 at Shinnecock Hills being a prime example.
