'It was just my time to go': Kilkenny's Grace Walsh on retirement

Former Kilkenny kimogi star Grace Walsh says she is happy with her decision to retire from inter-county kimogi.

Walsh, who won three All-Ireland titles, has decided to end her career with the Cats after last season.

With camogie playing such a significant role in her life, it was not an easy decision to make, but Walsh came to the conclusion that it was the best move for her.

“While I am truly happy with my decision, it is still difficult for me to talk about it as it has been an important part of my life for a long time.

“I've been part of the Kilkenny team since I was in school. I couldn't imagine my life without it.

“I decided before I went back to Kilkenny last year that this would be my last year, no matter how it ended. I felt it in my body and mind – it really was time to go.”

Given the work commitments that required her to travel back and forth to Dublin and the toll it was taking on her body, Walsh decided it was time to take a break.

“When I came back from Dublin, I was quite heavy at the end and I noticed that my body felt it on the pitch.

“Even though I was doing a lot of fitness, my body was tired most of the time. So I had to either stay in Dublin and retire or go back home and continue my training.”

“My heart wasn't 100 percent committed to it anymore, and I don't like doing anything unless I give it my all.”

The Walsh family have made a significant contribution to the development of hurling in Kilkenny, with her cousin Miriam also retiring at inter-county level and Tommy becoming an analyst after a highly successful career.

For the first time, Grace will be able to watch Kilkenny as a fan, having found little to do since leaving, including time spent in Australia.

“Since I came home, I've started a new job. I feel like my life has become quite full. Someone told me that they thought I was busier after retirement than I was before. I think I've found my stability.

“Honestly, it's nice to be a fan and watch the girls play. I like that side of life. It's just my time to go, and I'm very happy with my choice.”
