A group of psychologists believe scientists will never make contact with aliens because the aliens are likely to use communications based on unknown physical principles. They also say scientists are prone to so-called inattentional blindness.
A group of psychologists from the University of Cadiz in Spain published an article criticizing aliens seeking scientists involved in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence project (SETI), saying that they never come into contact with extraterrestrial civilizations.
According to an article published in acta Astronautica, the scientists involved in SETI focuses exclusively on the search for radio signals when the aliens are likely to use other forms of communication, including based on undiscovered physical principles. Therefore mankind will not be able to recognize these signals.
Psychologists also say that scientists are prone to the so-called “inattentional blindness”. This psychological phenomenon means that people may miss the object in his eyes, because his attention is concentrated on other objects. According to psychologists, scholars have focused too much instead of looking at other forms of communication, radio signals.
Psychotherapists have proved your point with cognitive test participation of volunteers 137. The test involves several stages: the first stage estimates a person’s ability to solve such problems, fast and intuitive, the answer to that would be wrong; after that, the psychologists showed the volunteers the aerial photographs of natural and man-made objects. Some photographs includes images photoshop a man in a gorilla suit.
It turned out that people who are prone to quick and intuitive responses have noticed that the gorilla-man more often than people who tend to give thought out, analyzed the answers. Psychologists say that these results show that scientists are likely to miss the various evidence of extraterrestrial life, which can be right in front of them and obvious.
Psychologists have also criticized the so-called Kardashev scale, used to classify civilizations in space based on their energy consumption. According to the Kardashev scale, first proposed by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964, civilization praised for “I” use all the resources of their planet; a rating of civilizations “second” use all the energy of their parent star and a rating of civilizations “III”, which can use the energy and resources of the entire galaxy. Instead, psychologists suggest a kind of scale, built on the capabilities to change their environment.
Humanity still depends on the natural conditions of the Earth, vulnerable to global catastrophes and in compliance with the rules of biological evolution. At the same time, people close enough to become space colonists, using the fruits of genetic engineering and nuclear physics. It makes humanity stuck between the first and second stage scale. A type II civilization should have control over quantum and gravitational energy, space-time and the ability to explore the galaxies, while type III civilization will consist of exotic, immortal beings with the power to take a few measurements and to manipulate dark energy and matter, the newspaper writes.
Therefore, searching for radio signals only to civilizations in the first stage of their scale, psychologists say.
