Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is “praying for a speedy recovery” for those injured after a car plowed into crowds following the Reds' Premier League trophy parade in the city on Monday night.
A 53-year-old man was arrested after his car struck several pedestrians on Water Street, near the end of the parade, leaving 50 people injured, including one child with serious injuries.
In a post on Instagram Stories, van Dijk said: “My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been hurt. I pray for a speedy recovery for all those who have been injured. We are all with you.”
Van Dijk's post came after his former manager Jurgen Klopp, who attended Sunday's final game of the season against Crystal Palace and then watched Monday's parade from a spot on the Strand close to where the incident later took place on Water Street, expressed support for those affected in a post of his own.
“My family and I are in shock and devastated,” Klopp wrote on Instagram. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have suffered and are hurting. You will never walk alone.”
Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan said in a video posted on the club's website: “This weekend has been a time of celebration, emotion and joy across the city and our fan base, and it has all ended with unimaginable scenes of grief following this terrible incident.”
“I would like to pay tribute to our emergency services and partner agencies – Merseyside Police, North West and St John Ambulance Services and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service – who have dealt with the aftermath of the incident, as well as to the staff at our hospitals across the city who have been caring for those injured, including, tragically, four children.
“I also want to thank our fans who witnessed this event and helped each other as much as they could.
“We continue to work with the emergency services and local authorities to support their investigation and would again urge anyone with further information about the incident to contact Merseyside Police.”
Liverpool's local rivals Everton issued a statement expressing their “deep sadness at the terrible incident” and calling on everyone
