Dick Cheney, who passed away on Monday, was among the most influential and controversial Republican vice presidents in history — and in recent times an outspoken detractor of Donald Trump.

Dick Cheney, along with his daughter, former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, conveyed their disagreement with Trump following his efforts to reject the 2020 election outcome and the assault by a pro-Trump crowd on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

President Trump has yet to issue a statement regarding Dick Cheney’s passing. The White House lowered flags on Tuesday morning, yet did not make any extensive announcement.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt informed reporters on Tuesday afternoon merely that Trump was "cognizant" that Dick Cheney had died.

"I understand the president is conscious of the former vice president's death. And as you observed, flags have been lowered to half mast in accordance with legislative requirements," she stated when questioned if Trump had engaged with the family or if the White House would participate in funeral arrangements for the former vice president.

In 2024, Dick Cheney and Liz Cheney supported Democrat Kamala Harris over Trump.

"In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who poses a greater danger to our republic than Donald Trump. He attempted to steal the previous election utilizing falsehoods and violence to maintain himself in authority after the voters had rejected him," Dick Cheney expressed in a statement.

"As citizens, we each possess an obligation to prioritize country over partisanship in order to defend our Constitution. Therefore, I will be casting my ballot for Vice President Kamala Harris," he mentioned.

Liz Cheney was regarded as a rising personality in the GOP, though she lost her reelection bid largely due to her disagreement with Trump. She held a significant position in probing Trump’s conduct after the 2020 election and on Jan. 6, 2021.

Liz Cheney likewise portrayed Trump as a danger to democracy in 2024, and campaigned for Harris in the concluding phase of the campaign.

Trump responded at the time by calling Dick Cheney "an irrelevant RINO, along with his daughter, who suffered defeat by the most significant extent in the History of Congressional Races!"

"He’s the King of Endless, Nonsensical Wars, squandering Lives and Trillions of Dollars, identically to Comrade Kamala Harris," Trump penned on his conservative social media platform.

Trump has stated on numerous occasions his belief that members of the House select committee that scrutinized Jan. 6, on which Liz Cheney acted as vice chair, should be imprisoned.

Dick Cheney, in a 2022 advertisement backing his daughter's reelection effort, denounced Trump as a "coward."

"He’s a coward. A genuine man would not deceive his supporters. He was defeated in his election, and he lost substantially. I am aware of it, he knows, and secretly I believe the majority of Republicans are aware," he remarked.

He also commended his daughter's examination of Trump's deeds leading up to and on Jan. 6, 2021.

"There is no action of greater importance that she will ever undertake than leading the endeavor to ensure Donald Trump never again nears the Oval Office," he concluded.
