Russian captain of ship that sank in North Sea taken into custody

The Russian captain of a container ship that collided with a US oil tanker in the North Sea has been produced in court and remanded in custody.

The captain of the Solong, Vladimir Motin, 59, from Primorsky Krai, St Petersburg, Russia, appeared at Hull Magistrates' Court on Saturday morning charged with manslaughter by negligence.

Motin sat in a glass-enclosed box during the 35-minute hearing, which heard about his vessel's collision with the US tanker Stena Immaculate off the east coast of Yorkshire on Monday.

The court heard that all 23 people on the tanker were rescued, as well as 13 crew members from the Solong, but 38-year-old Filipino citizen Mark Angelo Pernia was missing.

No application for bail was made and Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram, who attended the hearing via video link, decided to remand Motin in custody.

No comments were received.

Motin is due to appear at the Old Bailey on April 14.
