Police say there is 'no intelligence' linking Spain shooting to alleged gang feud

Police have confirmed there is “no intelligence” to link the deaths of two Scots in a Spanish bar to recent crime in mid-Scotland.

Two men, believed to be Eddie Lyons Jr and Ross Monaghan, died after a gunman opened fire outside Monaghans bar in Fuengirola, Malaga, on Saturday.

The incident occurred at around 11:00 p.m. when a car pulled up to the bar, a masked man got out and started shooting at two people standing at the entrance to the establishment.

The attacker then fled in a car, and both men died at the scene.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Police Scotland said the attack did not appear to be linked to a pattern of crimes being committed by rival gangs in Scotland and that any suggestion to that effect was “not helpful” to the investigation.

The statement said: “The investigation into the fatal shootings in Fuengirola is being carried out by Spanish police.

“Police Scotland provides support to Spanish colleagues on request, however we currently do not have any officers in Spain.

“There is currently no evidence to link the deaths of these two men in Spain to the recent crimes in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge.

“Any disinformation or rumours linking the events in Spain do not contribute to the ongoing investigations in either country.

“Furthermore, there is no reason to believe that the Fuengirola shooting was planned in Scotland.”

Operation Portaledge is investigating an alleged gang feud that has been linked to a series of shootings, arson attacks and assaults in the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas since March.

More than 40 people have now been arrested in connection with these incidents.
