ABC News forecasts that Democratic contender Zohran Mamdani will secure victory in the New York City mayoral contest, marking a historic triumph over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat running as an independent, along with Republican hopeful Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani, 34, a state representative and democratic socialist who ran his campaign on a progressive economic agenda, is poised to become the city’s inaugural Muslim and South Asian mayor in an election that drew more than 2 million voters to the polls — the largest turnout for a mayoral election since 1969.

With roughly 60% of the anticipated vote tallied, Mamdani was in the lead with 50% of the vote, followed by Cuomo at 42% and Sliwa with 8%.

Mamdani had consistently been the leading candidate since securing the Democratic nomination and gained significant endorsements from figures like Gov. Kathy Hochul. However, he encountered some criticism concerning the practicality of his plans and past or present opinions on subjects such as law enforcement.

Cuomo, 67, had attempted a political resurgence, after stepping away from the public eye when he resigned from his position as governor in 2021 amidst allegations of sexual harassment and improper behavior. He portrayed himself as a centrist capable of utilizing his prior experience as governor to achieve results.

Separately, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, dismissed requests to withdraw from the race, contending that he stands apart from the other candidates; he competed against the incumbent Eric Adams in 2021.

Adams himself opted not to participate in the Democratic primary and initially launched an independent campaign, but ended his campaign in late September, citing that media speculation and funds withheld by the city’s campaign finance board hindered his fundraising capabilities.
