The Pentagon has formally notified the Illinois National Guard of an authorized mission in Chicago, according to a source in Illinois.

The source verified the mission entails 300 Guardsmen, with responsibilities including the protection of federally owned properties under Title 10 authority.

The Guard has yet to receive official mobilization orders, implying that it will require several days to gather and prepare soldiers—as well as conduct mission-specific training, according to the source.

The source indicated that the earliest possible deployment of Guardsmen in Chicago would be toward the end of the current week.

“The Governor was not contacted by any federal officials. The Illinois National Guard informed the Department of War that the situation in Illinois does not warrant military intervention; consequently, the Governor is against the deployment of the National Guard under any condition,” a representative for Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker declared in a public statement.

The authorization unfolds amid rising tensions in Chicago linked to the Trump administration's intensified efforts to curtail immigration.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents on Saturday shot and injured a woman whom they accused of participating in a protest convoy that allegedly collided with their vehicles during an "ambush."

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem asserted that Border Patrol agents fired upon the woman in an act of self-preservation, alleging that she possessed a semiautomatic firearm and operated one of three vehicles that "hemmed in" and impacted the CBP agents' vehicles.

Describing the episode as "genuinely odd," Noem claimed that prior to the shooting, a group of 10 vehicles trailed the CBP agents and officers on Chicago streets.

"They pursued and cornered them, effectively trapping them, and as our agents exited their vehicles, the drivers attempted to run them over while brandishing semiautomatic handguns, compelling our agents to act in self-defense, resulting in shots being fired and one assailant being hospitalized for attacking the officers," Noem conveyed in a statement on Sunday.
