Macrons Sue Influencer For Claim French First Lady Was Born Male

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte filed a libel lawsuit in the United States on Wednesday against far-right activist Candace Owens, citing her claim that France's first lady is a man.

The Macrons allege in a lawsuit filed in Delaware Superior Court that Owens has waged a deceitful “campaign of global humiliation” and “relentless harassment” to promote her podcast and grow her “rabid” audience.

The lawsuit states that the false information included the claim that Brigitte Macron, 72, was born under the name Jean-Michel Trogneux, which is the real name of her older brother.

“Every time the Macrons leave their home, they do so knowing that many people have heard these shameful statements and many of them have believed them,” the complaint says. “It is an invasion, inhumane and completely unfair.”

Owens did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment. Macron's office declined to comment.

The lawsuit contains 22 counts and seeks an unspecified amount in compensatory and punitive damages.

Wednesday's lawsuit marks a rare instance of a world leader suing for libel. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump filed several libel suits, including one against the publisher of The Wall Street Journal.

To succeed in libel cases in the US, public figures such as the Macrons and Trump must show that defendants acted with “actual malice,” meaning they knew their information was false or had reckless disregard for its truth.
