The White House is actively deploying American diplomats to encourage nations to reject a UN resolution that urges Washington to eliminate its embargo on Cuba, pointing to evidence of Cuba’s assistance to Russian aggression, according to Reuters, referencing an internal State Department communication.
As part of this endeavor, American diplomats will inform nations that the Cuban regime is providing active backing for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They will assert that approximately 5,000 Cubans are participating in combat operations alongside Russian troops.
It’s worth noting that the Trump administration has instructed diplomats to lobby governments against the resolution, which has been adopted by the UN General Assembly since 1992. The cable asserts that the UN is “inaccurately” attributing Cuba’s difficulties to the United States, claiming they are caused by “its own corruption and ineptitude.”
“Negative votes are preferred, but abstentions or absences/non-votes are also valuable,” the dispatch stated.
The United States has enforced numerous new sanctions on the communist Caribbean island since a trade embargo was established following Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution.
Recall that in January, Trump reinstated Cuba on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. Prior to that, Joe Biden had removed it, as part of his agreement with the Cuban government, the island’s authorities released at least 88 prisoners .
